Good Thoughts/Bad Thoughts from The College Football weekend

Posted by deaconcat08 on October 4, 2009

Good Thougths:

1.  IDAHO-  Do you believe?  Pretty incredible this team only has one loss.  I envisioned a 2-10 season at best for the Vandals, but right now they are sitting atop the WAC standings with their only loss coming at Washington.  Wait, that’s the same loss that Southern Cal has, and the Trojans are considered national title contenders!  In fact, if both USC and Idaho keep up their winning ways, the only difference between the 2 teams at the end of the year will be that Idaho will have a win versus a  top 5 team (Boise State, November 14).  Are the Vandals the new BCS buster?

2.  College Gameday- After making a horrible Gameday location decision this past weekend, the crew completely redeemed itself by choosing to go to Baton Rouge for next Saturday’s LSU-Florida game.  While that is clearly the game of the week, Gameday has in the past chosen to primarily visit sites of games broadcast on ESPN or ABC.  They could have done the same thing this week by going to a somewhat decent Big 10 showdown between Iowa and Michigan, but I’m glad to see they’ve thrown the promotional considerations aside to go honor the true game of the week, depsite the fact that it’s being broadcast by CBS.

3.  LSU- I’ve dogged this team for weeks now, so I feel like I finally need to give them a little bit of credit for going into Athens and winning a big road game.  Still don’t think they have a good chance to beat Florida this weekend, but you have to admire Les Miles’ continuing ability to just find ways to win footbal  games.

Bad Thoughts:

1.  Pollsters- Some things never cease to amaze me… like how Virginia Tech, who barely squeaked by the almighty Duke Blue Devils this Saturday, somehow moved past Boise State in both polls when the Broncos won easily against UC-Davis.  Also, how can we be 6 weeks into the season, and the AP poll still doesn’t have all the BCS unbeatens ranked?  I’m banking on the CFRA not to have that problem this week.

2.  Houston- The latest victim of the overhype bug.  Apparently, it’s more contagious than Swine Flu.  This is one meltdown I didn’t see coming however.  Shame on the Cougars’ defense for allowing their team’s BCS hopes to die when their quarterback threw 51 completions for 536 yards.

3.  Notre Dame-  So, so bad.  I almost had another incredible longshot upset pick before the Irish squeaked out another victory over a mediocre opponents.  If this team loses to Southern Cal (which they will), and still manages to make a BCS bowl, then I may quit watching college football altogether.
