Good Thoughts/Bad Thoughts from College Football Week 10

Posted by deaconcat08 on November 8, 2009

Good Thoughts:

1.  Next week’s conference title games- While many conference/division titles have already been decided or are virtually over (Clemson in ACC, Florida and Bama in SEC, Texas in Big 12 South), it is nice to see that we have some de facto conference championship/division championship games next week.  Ohio State/Iowa will decide the Big 10 title.  TCU/Utah will almost certainly decide the Mountain West Champ.   And strangely enough, GT/Duke will have major ACC Coastal title implications, despite the fact that Duke probably won’t make a bowl game if they lose.

2.  Next week’s major tests for unbeatens- Aside from the aforementioned conference championship games, this is the last week that five or more of the remaining unbeatens will play tough games.  Boise will matchup against the cinderella story of the year in Idaho.  TCU plays Utah.  Florida goes to South Carolina, who is 5-0 at home this year.  Cincy has a big Friday night game against West Virginia.  And Alabama goes to Starkville to play Mississippi State in a matchup that has trap game written all over it.

3.  College basketball season starts this week-  Yeah I know this thought doesn’t really belong in this column, but its such an important development that it deserves mentioning.

Bad Thoughts:

1.  Wake Forest heartbreakers- My Deacons are killing me this year, as they came within a play of beating a top 10 team on the road this week, yet they probably won’t make a bowl game.  However, given all the lucky breaks we got in our 2006 ACC Championship season, I guess I can’t complain too much.

2.  Disrespecting Boise- It boggles my mind that the Broncos continue to drop in the polls and the BCS Standings despite blowing out their opposition.  They can’t help they play in the WAC, and they shouldn’t be penalized for it.  You can make an argument that TCU is better than the Smurf Turf All-Stars, but I don’t see how you can say the same about Cincy, who had to hold on for dear life at home to beat a mediocre UConn team.

3.  Early season college basketball matchups- Another misplaced mention of college basketball in this column, but it has to be said that as excited as well are about the start of the college hoops season, the early season games are horrible this year.  Aside from the preseason bball tourneys (which are also worse than usual), there is literally nothing to get excited about for the next couple of weeks.  I miss the days where the season began the “tip-off classic” between two big-time programs every year.
