My weekly picks are back! For the 14th consecutive season, I am going to be posting my weekly college football and NFL picks against the spread and my upsets to watch out for on this blog. As usual, we will start with my upset picks, where I correctly picked at least one upset every single week of the past two seasons except for conference championship week last year. I also four correctly picked double-digit underdog victories during that timeframe. Without further ado, here are my week 0 and 1 upsets to watch out for. The upsets below are in order from least shocking to most shocking according to the current lines at the Caesar Sportsbook.
Fresno State (+4.0) at Purdue- 12:00– these big matchups against Power 5 opposition are typically when the Bulldogs play their best.
South Alabama (+6.0) at Tulane- 8:00– The Jaguars gave the Bruins all they could handle last September. Now, I think they go one step further and knock off a top 25 team on the road to start the season this year.
Hawaii (+7.0) vs. Stanford- (Fri) 11:00– The Rainbow Warriors have some major advantages in this one, as not only do they force the Cardinal to travel all the way out to the islands for this game but they also get a week 0 game to iron out any wrinkles beforehand.
North Texas (+7.0) vs. California- 4:00– I am calling for the Golden Bears to be my # 1 surprise team for 2023, and it would be just my luck if that all falls apart in week 1 with an upset loss in Denton.
Toledo (+9.0) at Illinois- 7:30– The Rockets are better than most people realize and could complete an undefeated season if they find a way get out Champaign with a win in week 1.
UL-Monroe (+10.0) vs. Army- 7:00– The Warhawks are really bad but Army playing in their first game with a shotgun offense could be worse.
Colorado State (+12.0) vs. Washington State- 7:00– A lot of Power 5 teams are going on the road to play Mountain West squads in week 1 and that could end up being a bad move for several of them.
Wyoming (+14.0) vs. Texas Tech- 7:30– See comment above about the Colorado State/Wazzu game
Boise State (+14.5) at Washington- 3:30– The Huskies are going to be really good this year but so are the Broncos, and these are these early season matchups against Power 5 teams are what Boise has built their brand on.
Coastal Carolina (+14.5) at UCLA- 10:30– Grayson McCall’s signature college football moment has always been his epic upset victory over BYU in 2020. I am calling for him to have a similar moment to start this season with an upset win at the Rose Bowl against a Bruin team who might be starting a true freshman at quarterback.
San Jose State (+17.5) vs. Oregon State- (Sun) 3:30– See comments above about the Colorado State/Wazzu and Wyoming/Texas Tech games. If I am going to pick the Beavers to be my # 1 disappointment team in the country, I might as well call for them to disappoint right out of the gate.
