I don’t believe I have ever posted a Kentucky Derby Preview article before, but as a diehard sports fan that grew up in Kentucky, this race means a lot to me. In fact, I would go as far as say that it is my favorite single day sporting event in the world (the Super Bowl is a close second). So for what it’s worth, I thought I would share my predicted Kentucky Derby order of finish for this year’s race.
Track Phantom | 20-1 | My sentimenal favorite and I am due a derby win
Fierceness | 5-2 | Best horse in field is due a bad day but still good enough for second
Just A Touch | 10-1 | Good pedigree, good trainer/jockey, good speed figure
Catching Freedom | 8-1 | solid horse that is consistenly improving but don’t like closers in Derby
Resilience | 20-1 | Wood Memorial winner with 2nd best speed figure in race is undervalued
Sierra Leone | 3-1 | great horse but it is really hard for a closer to win Derby b/c of amount of traffic to navigate
Just Steel | 20-1 | experienced horse that has hall of fame dad and hall of fame trainer; a lot to like here
Honor Marie | 20-1 | this year’s wise-guy sleeper pick in well earned but those horses rarely win
Dornoch | 20-1 | only horse to beat Sierra Leone will run well but his best racing days are behind him
Mystik Dan | 20-1 | If it is a rainy track, then this horse may be the one to beat
Society Man | 50-1 | Has 3rd best speed figure in race and is somehow the biggest longshot; great value bet
Stronghold | 20-1 | Santa Anita Dery winner dominated weak field on west coast
Forever Young (JPN) | 10-1 | The KY Derby’s greatest paradigm: Overhyped foreign horses always disappoint.
Domestic Product | 30-1 | I like the trainer and jockey but not much else here, as he enters race on lengthy layoff
West Saratoga | 50-1 | This year’s feel-good story in the race. Unfortuantely, those horses rarely win.
Endlessly | 30-1 | It is a bad sign when the horse’s own trainer preferred to run him in a turf race on the Derby undercard
Epic Ride | 50-1 | He was an alternate entrant into the field for a reason but horse has enough promise to make Rich Strike comparisons.
Catalytic | 30-1 | Never finished worse than 2nd but speed figure indicates he isn’t going to keep that streak going
Grand Mo The First | 50-1 | All you need to know about this horse is that he is only Derby entrant in field whose top speed figure is under 90.
T O Password (JPN) | 30-1 | A foreign horse with only two prior starts. Kinda makes the Japanese auto bid into the Derby seem like a joke.
