A few years back I began ranking Super Bowls from best to worst based on a combination of excitement level, storyline intrigue, and number of memorable moments. Now, my list hast been updated to include last Sunday’s big game (which as you might imagine is near the bottom of the list). Feel free to comment or debate.
| 1 | Super Bowl III- NY Jets 16, Baltimore 7 (1969) |
It wasn’t the closest Super Bowl, the most high scoring, or the most entertaining. However, it was the game that turned this event from an exhibition game between a superior league champ and an inferior league champ (think XFL vs. NFL) into the world’s greatest championship game. This was the game that created the Super Bowl which is why it has to be # 1.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 2 | Super Bowl LI- New England 34, Atlanta 28 (OT) (2017) |
One of the most incredible championship games I have ever seen and one of the greatest comebacks in postseason history. This is the game that cemented Tom Brady as the Greatest Football of All-Time.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 3 | Super Bowl LVIII: Kansas City 25, San Francisco 22 (OT) (2024) |
The longest Super Bowl game of all-time has to be near the top of this list.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 4 | Super Bowl XXXII- Denver 31, Green Bay 24 (1998) |
People often forget how dominant the NFC was in this game in the late 1980’s and early 90’s. Leading into this game the NFC has in fact won 13 consecutive Super Bowls in a streak that extended prior to the time I was born in 1985. To put that into context, the second longest conference win streak in Super Bowl history is just five straight wins. The worst part about the streak is that most of the Super Bowls occurring within it were blowout victories by the NFC. This is the game that finally ended the streak and gave John Elway his first Super Bowl championship. The era of NFC domination ended with this game and the Super Bowl has been much more competitive ever since.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 5 | Super Bowl XXXVI- New England 20, St. Louis 17 (2002) |
Few people remember just how monumental of an upset this was. This is the game that started the Brady/Belichick dynasty and gave my beloved Patriots their first Super Bowl title in dramatic fashion
———————————————————————————————————–
| 6 | Super Bowl XXIII- San Francisco 20, Cincinnati 16 (1989) |
This is the game that made Joe Montana a legend as he engineered of the greatest end of game clutch drives that you will ever see.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 7 | Super Bowl XLIX- New England 28, Seattle 24 (2015) |
This the game that started the Patriot resurgence as they had gone ten years without a Super Bowl victory. Malcolm Butler’s interception on the goal line is one of the most clutch defensive plays in sports history.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 8 | Super Bowl XXXIV- St. Louis 23, Tennessee 16 (2000) |
The “longest yard Super Bowl” had one of the most memorable endings in the history of this game. The Rams victory also culminated one of the greatest Super Bowl Cinderella stories of all-time.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 9 | Super Bowl XLII- New York Giants 17, New England 14 (2008) |
A great Super Bowl upset that denied what would have been only the second perfect season in NFL history.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 10 | Super Bowl XXV- New York Giants 20, Buffalo 19 (1991) |
The “wide right” game had one of the most exciting endings to a Super Bowl that you will ever see and by far the best ending to any Super Bowl in the 1990’s.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 11 | Super Bowl XXXVIII- New England 32, Carolina 29 (2004) |
I am a bit partial to this game because it is the only one that has featured both of my two favorite teams in the league. With that being said, it still featured one of the best fourth quarters of a Super Bowl ever, as these teams lit up the scoreboard back and forth until the very last play.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 12 | Super Bowl XLIII- Pittsburgh 27, Arizona 23 (2009) |
A great game that was won with won of the most incredible touchdown catches that you ever see in a Super Bowl.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 13 | Super Bowl XLVI- New York Giants 21, New England 17 (2012) |
There is a fairly big drop off after the prior game, as this is the first game on this list that I would call “very good” but not an “all-time classic”. This was the second Eli Manning Super Bowl upset over Patriots and cemented his legacy as Tom Brady’s kryptonite.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 14 | Super Bowl V- Baltimore 16, Dallas 13 (1971) |
The only Super Bowl to feature an MVP that played for the losing team (the Cowboys’ Chuck Howley) was also the first to be decided in the final seconds of play.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 15 | Super Bowl LII- Philadelphia 41, New England 33 (2018) |
The Eagles first-ever Super Bowl victory was a back and forth war that was decided in the final minutes of the 4th quarter.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 16 | Super Bowl XVI- San Francisco 26, Cincinnati 21 (1982) |
This Super Bowl is largely forgotten because the rematch between these two teams seven years later had a better ending. However, this was the game that started the 49ers dynasty and also featured a great 4th quarter comeback by the Bengals that came up just short.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 17 | Super Bowl XXXIX- New England 24, Philadelphia 21 (2005) |
You may have noticed a trend here, as the Pats were involved in so many great Super Bowls that I have intentionally tried not to group them together. Therefore, I am alternating Super Bowls that the Pats participated in with games they did not. This is just the fifth highest ranked Patriot Super Bowl win of their six on this list which is pretty incredible considering that this was a very close three point title game.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 18 | Super Bowl XIII- Pittsburgh 35, Dallas 31 (1979) |
Most of the 1970’s Steelers Super Bowl wins were snoozefests, with the exception of this high-scoring affair against their arch rival at the time in Dallas.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 19 | Super Bowl LVI- LA Rams 23, Cincinnati 20 (2022) |
This was one of the most forgettable good Super Bowl games, as it just lacked any truly memorable moments despite being very close throughout.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 20 | Super Bowl VII- Miami 14, Washington 7 (1973) |
This was the game that punctuated the only perfect season in NFL history, as the Dolphins survived a major scare from the Skins. This Dolphins team is still the only Super Bowl champion to win the game despite being shut out the entire second half of the title game.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 21 | Super Bowl X- Pittsburgh 21, Dallas 17 (1976) |
A close game that featured what one of the greatest and most memorable catches in Super Bowl history by Lynn Swann.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 22 | Super Bowl XLVII- Baltimore 34, San Francisco 31 (2013) |
A good game that featured a lengthy power outage and then came right down to the wire.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 23 | Super Bowl LVII- Kansas City 38, Philadelphia 35 (2023) |
This game would be higher on the list but for the fact it was decided largely by a controversial defensive holding call in the game’s final two minutes which setup a chip shot game winning field goal for the Chiefs. The fact that Kansas City also benefited from questionable late game officiating in the AFC Championship Game as well cheapens this title to a certain extent.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 24 | Super Bowl XLV- Green Bay 31, Pittsburgh 25 (2011) |
I probably have a little bias against this game because it featured two teams that I absolutely disdain. With that being said, it can still be adequately described as a close game that lacked any truly memorable moments.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 25 | Super Bowl LIII- New England 13, LA Rams 3 (2019) |
This was last of the Patriot championships and the only Pats’ Super Bowl title that can’t be considered an all-time classic due to the lack of offense throughout. Nevertheless, it was still a close game that featured a memorable late game touchdown drive by Tom Brady. As you may have noticed, we have now moved from Super Bowls decided by one possession to those decided two.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 26 | Super Bowl XLIV- New Orleans 31, Indianapolis 17 (2010) |
This was a very good game that gave us one of the most sentimental Super Bowl champions, as Drew Brees and the Saints were a great story winning their first-ever title just a few years after the city was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 27 | Super Bowl XXXI- Green Bay 35, New England 21 (1997) |
This was one of the most difficult losses of my childhood, as Desmond Howard’s kickoff return denied my beloved Pats their first Super Bowl title.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 28 | Super Bowl LIV- Kansas City 31, San Francisco 20 (2020) |
This was the game that started the Chiefs’ dynasty, as Patrick Mahomes executed an impressive second half comeback to earn the Chiefs their first Super Bowl title in 50 years.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 29 | Super Bowl XXX- Dallas 27, Pittsburgh 17 (1996) |
This was the first Super Bowl of that I watched as a kid that was actually close and the first one for which I hosted a Super Bowl party. The Steelers were in position to make a game winning drive in the final minutes but a Larry Brown interception sealed the deal for the Cowboys.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 30 | Super Bowl XVII- Washington 27, Miami 17 (1983) |
A good game that featured one of the greatest runs in Super Bowl history with John Riggins 43 yard scamper for a touchdown in the game’s final quarter.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 31 | Super Bowl XL- Pittsburgh 21, Seattle 10 (2006) |
We are starting to head into the territory of games that weren’t completely blowouts but that also weren’t particularly good either. Despite being close throughout, this Super Bowl was largely forgettable game that is best remembered for giving Hall of Fame coach Bill Cowher his only title with a Steeler team that entered the playoffs as a 6 seed.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 32 | Super Bowl 50- Denver 24, Carolina 10 (2016) |
This game will likely be remembered as the Super Bowl that gave Peyton Manning a second title, but it was really won by the Bronco defense who kept what was at the time the league’s most explosive offense in check .
———————————————————————————————————–
| 33 | Super Bowl XIV- Pittsburgh 31, LA Rams 19 (1980) |
This was the last of the Steeler titles under the Chuck Noll/Terry Bradshaw dynasty and had the makings of a huge Rams upset until Pittsburgh put the game away with two fourth quarter touchdowns.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 34 | Super Bowl IX- Pittsburgh 16, Minnesota 6 (1975) |
This was not surprisingly a low-scoring slugfest featuring two of the most famous defense of all-time in Pittsburgh’s “Steel Curtain” and Minnesota’s “Purple People Eaters”. The game was close until Larry Brown’s touchdown reception sealed it for Pittsburgh late in the 4th.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 35 | Super Bowl XXVI- Washington 37, Buffalo 24 (1992) |
This was the first Super Bowl I ever watched as a six year old kid, and the outcome was never was really in doubt. This game was not nearly as close as the final score indicates as the Skins got up 17-0 at halftime and coasted to victory from there.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 36 | Super Bowl XXXIII- Denver 34, Atlanta 19 (1999) |
The second of Elway’s back-to-back titles was not nearly as exciting as his first. The Falcons were a good Cinderella story that just got over matched in the big game.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 37 | Super Bowl XLI- Indianapolis 29, Chicago 17 (2007) |
You will soon see that this is the lowest rated of all of the Super Bowls with two score margins of victory. That is because even though the Bears got off to an early lead, everyone knew they wouldn’t be able to hold off Peyton Manning’s Colts. It was also marred by sloppy play as the two teams combined for eight turnovers in the game.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 38 | Super Bowl LV- Tampa Bay 31, Kansas City 9 (2021) |
Sometimes a game can be memorable and historic without being close. That describes Super Bowl LV perfectly, as Brady won his record-setting seventh and final Super Bowl title with a surprising blowout victory over the Chiefs. The historical significance of this game is why it ranks at the top of the list of three score Super Bowl victories.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 39 | Super Bowl XXVIII- Dallas 30, Buffalo 13 (1994) |
Believe it or not, this 17 point Cowboy win was a lot closer game than many expected. This was a rematch of the previous year’s Super Bowl in which the Cowboys won by 35 points, so it was expected Dallas would run away with this one as well. Instead, Buffalo actually held a 13-6 lead at half before the Cowboys got going and finished off the Bills in what ended up being the last of Buffalo’s four consecutive Super Bowl appearances.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 40 | Super Bowl IV- Kansas City 23, Minnesota 7 (1970) |
The original Chiefs Super Bowl championship squad would get more recognition for their incredible 13.5 point Super Bowl upset over the Vikings had the Jets not stolen their thunder and beaten the Colts as an 18 point underdog the year prior. Kansas City ultimately dominated this game from the start taking a 16-0 halftime lead and cruising to victory after that.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 41 | Super Bowl VI- Dallas 24, Miami 3 (1972) |
The first Super Bowl title for the Cowboys ended up being the only loss for the Dolphins in the calendar year of 1972, as they rebounded from this crushing defeat to run the table the following season. This was a dominant performance by Dallas who became the only team in the first 52 Super Bowl to prevent their opponent from scoring a touchdown.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 42 | Super Bowl VIII- Miami 24, Minnesota 7 (1974) |
The Dolphins became the second team to ever repeat as Super Bowl champions, as they dominated the Vikings by jumping out to 24-0 lead through three quarters and then holding on comfortably from there. This game is probably most famous for being the last official NFL contest played with goalposts located in the front of the end zone.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 43 | Super Bowl II- Green Bay 33, Oakland 14 (1968) |
The second Super Bowl was actually better than the first, but not by much, as the Packers cruised to a second straight world championship with a comfortable victory over the Raiders.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 44 | Super Bowl XIX- San Francisco 38, Miami 16 (1985) |
The much publicized Super Bowl matchup between two of the best quarterbacks of all-time, Montana and Marino, did not live up to the hype as the 49ers cruised to an easy victory thanks largely to Joe Montana’s Super Bowl record-breaking 331 yard passing performance.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 45 | Super Bowl XI- Oakland 32, Minnesota 14 (1977) |
Sadly, the Minnesota Vikings have lost all four of the Super Bowls they played in and none of them were particularly close. John Madden’s Raiders dominated this one, as they jumped out to a 16-0 lead and halftime and never allowed the Vikings to get close after that.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 46 | Super Bowl XV- Oakland 27, Philadelphia 10 (1981) |
Interestingly enough, the Raiders have played in five different Super Bowls and all of them were blowouts one way or the other. The Eagles were actually favored to win this game by 3, but instead, the Raiders became the first wildcard team ever to win a Super Bowl with this easy victory. Oakland got out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, and Philly never really got back in the game after that.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 47 | Super Bowl XII- Dallas 27, Denver 10 (1978) |
Speaking of teams that played in a bunch of bad Super Bowl games, the Denver Broncos of the late 70’s and 80’s laid eggs in four different Super Bowls over the course of an 11 year period. This was the first of their Super Bowl clunkers as Dallas lead 13-0 at halftime and then got up 20-3 in the third quarter en route to an easy win.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 48 | Super Bowl XXI- New York Giants 39, Denver 20 (1987) |
Here is the second of five Bronco losses to make the list. The Broncos actually had a first quarter lead in this one, but the Giants ran off 24 straight points over the next two and half quarters to runaway with this one. Sadly, that was not the worst stretch of football played by Denver in a Super Bowl. You’ll see further down this list that in the following Super Bowl the Broncos played the worst quarter in the history of this game.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 49 | Super Bowl LIX- Philadelphia 40, Kansas City 22 (2025) |
Not many people wanted to see these two teams play in a rematch of the Super Bowl from two years prior but most believed it would at least be a close game. That turned out not to be the case as Jalen Hurts led the Eagles to a comfortable victory of Mahomes’ Chiefs. This game would likely be lower on this list but for a late Kansas City touchdown catch that made the score look more respectable than it actually was.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 50 | Super Bowl XVIII- LA Raiders 38, Washington 9 (1984) |
We are now entering total blowout territory on this list, as the Raiders set the record at the time for largest margin of victory in a Super Bowl with this 29 point thrashing of Washington. Marcus Allen became the first running back not to be classified as a fullback to win the Super Bowl MVP.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 51 | Super Bowl I- Green Bay 35, Kansas City 10 (1967) |
You have to be happy that someone had the forethought to continue to play this game because the first ever Super Bowl was a clunker. The game actually only had a four point margin at halftime, but then the Packers scored the last 21 points of the game and cruised to victory.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 52 | Super Bowl XX- Chicago 46, New England 10 (1986) |
The backdrop for this game was cool, as it featured two teams who had never been to the Super Bowl before. In fact, this was the last Super Bowl to feature two teams that never played in the title game. Nevertheless, the game did not deliver in terms of entertainment value or drama, as the Cinderella Pats were dismantled by Refrigerator Perry’s Chicago Bears. The Pats actually had negative total yardage in the first half of play and only finished with 123 for the entire game.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 53 | Super Bowl XXXVII- Tampa Bay 48, Oakland 21 (2003) |
The Jon Gruden bowl featuring the team he was coaching and the team he coached previously was a pretty big did. The Bucs took a 20-3 lead into halftime and never allowed the Raiders to get back in the game after that.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 54 | Super Bowl XLVIII- Seattle 43, Denver 8 (2014) |
It is hard to say that a game can be over after one play but this one kind of felt like it. As soon as the ball was snapped over Peyton Manning’s head on the first play of the game for a safety, it just felt like it was going to be Seattle’s night. The Seahawks eventually extended their lead to 22-0 at half and the game was pretty much over at that point.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 55 | Super Bowl XXXV- Baltimore 34, New York Giants 7 (2001) |
This was just the ultimate “blah” of a Super Bowl. The game had no real intriguing storylines, the teams weren’t particularly interesting, and the game was never very close.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 56 | Super Bowl XXII- Washington 42, Denver 10 (1988) |
The third Denver Bronco game on this list was one where they had one of the worst second quarter meltdowns in the history of football. Leading 10-0 after the first quarter, the Broncos and their fans thought maybe they had a chance to finally win a Super Bowl after failing to win the game in their two other appearances. That dream was quickly dispelled as the Redskins proceeded to score 35 straight points, all in the second quarter! Obviously the game was over by halftime and the Broncos joined the Vikings as the only other franchise at the time to lose four Super Bowls.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 57 | Super Bowl XXVII- Dallas 52, Buffalo 17 (1993) |
One of the great Super Bowl beatdowns of all-time, pure and simple. You know its a bad omen for a game when O.J. Simpson is brought out to do the pregame coin toss. Once the game started, the Bills proceeded to turn the ball over a Super Bowl record nine times en route to a 35 point loss. Sadly, the final score should have been even worse than it actually was, as the Cowboys were denied a fourth 4th quarter touchdown thanks to Don Beebee’s stunning strip of Leon Lett at the goal line during a near scoop and score.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 58 | Super Bowl XXIV- San Francisco 55, Denver 10 (1990) |
As you have probably noticed, the 1990’s were definitely the worst Super Bowl decade of all-time as only one of the ten NFL championship games played during that time period were decided by a single score. In fact, the decade started off with the game that still stands as the most lopsided Super Bowl contest of all-time. The 49ers set Super Bowl records that still stand for most points scored by a team , the largest margin of victory, and most touchdowns scored in their 45 point throttling of the Denver Broncos.
———————————————————————————————————–
| 59 | Super Bowl XXIX- San Francisco 49, San Diego 26 (1995) |
Could the Super Bowl that featured the worst halftime show in the history of this event actually be ranked as the worst game of all-time as well? The answer is yes, as this game was over as soon as it started, if not before. Prior to this matchup, everyone knew the upstart Chargers stood no chance against Steve Young’s 49ers, as the game featured the largest point spread in the history of the Super Bowl at San Francisco -18.5. The 49ers then proceeded to score two long touchdowns in the first five minutes of the first quarter and abruptly ended any far-fetched hopes of a Charters’ upset. The final score wasn’t among the most lopsided in the history of the Super Bowl, as the Chargers scored in every quarter to keep the final score somewhat respectable, but the fact that not a scintilla of game pressure was put on the 49ers by the Chargers at any point in this contest, makes it the all-time worst in my opinion.

Now that I have created and published a detailed ranking of every Super Bowl game, halftime show, and logo, it is time for me to average out these three rankings for each game and come up with a ranking of the best/worst Super Bowl events of all-time. Without further ado, here is my comprehensive Super Bowl ranking list that include each edition’s game, halftime, and logo ranking. Please note that for all Super Events that ended up tied the higher ranked game was given the nod.
