I wasn’t able to post these predictions for the Derby because of a murder trial I was participating in, but here are my predictions and analysis for the second jewel of the Triple Crown, the Preakness.
| Predicted Order of Finish | ||
(7) Sandman (4-1) | This beautiful light gray horse finished a disappoint 7th after going off as the second favorite in the race; however, his closing style could benefit him more in Pimlico due to the smaller field and the vast amount of early speed we will likely see in this race; (9) 3-1-2-3; closer
(2) Journalism (8-5) | Derby runner-up who dominated Santa Anita Derby; has top speed figure in race and is the well-deserved favorite in the race; has never finished out of the money; last horse to finish 2nd in Derrby and win the Preakness has Exaggerator in 2016. (6) 4-1-1-0; stalker
(8) Clever Again (5-1) | Steve Asmussen trained horse; Son of American Pharoah will be one of the early leaders in the race; there is typically one horse that doesn’t run in the Derby that contends for the Preakness crown and that could be this horse in 2025. (3) 2-1-0-0; pacesetter
(6) River Thames (9-2) | Todd Pletcher trained horse; Third-place finisher in Blue Grass Stakes sat out the Derby to prep for this race; did not race as a 6 year old; was 2nd place to the Derby winner Sovereignty at Fountain of Youth; Pletcher is 0 for 10 all-time in the Preakness; (4) 2-1-1-0; stalker
(1) Goal Oriented (6-1) | Bob Baffert trained horse; lightly-raced with only two career starts but won both (only undefeated horse in the field); Baffert is trying to break his own record for most Preakness wins (currently has 8); will likely be part of the early speed in this race; (2) 2-0-0-0; pacesetter
(9) Gosger (20-1) | Won the Lexington Stakes in Keeneland but lacks experience against the top 3 year olds in this year’s class. Son of Nyquist (2015 Derby winner); won both of his starts as a three year old (wins at Gulfstreak Park and Keeneland). (3) 2-1-0-0; stalker
(3) American Promise (15-1) | D. Wayne Lukas trained horse; finished a disappointed 16th in Derby; son of the last Triple Crown winner Justify; Lukas has won the Preakness 7 times including last year with Seize the Gray. He can tie Baffert for most wins all-time witha victory here; (10) 2-1-1-6; stalker
(4) Heart of Honor (12-1) | international horse that has done most of his racing in Dubai; three straight 2nd place finishes against horses a step below these raises major concerns; also no foreign bred horse has won the Preakness since 1964 and no overseas horse has won it since 1918 (6) 2-4-0-0; closer
(5) Pay Billy (20-1) | Won auto bid into Preakness with victory in the local Federico Tesio Stakes. It took him four races to break maiden but has won 4 out of his 5 starts since then. The bad news is that no Tesio Stakes winner has finished better than 6th in seven tries since 2012. (8) 4-1-1-2; stalker
