Greatest Wrestling Matches by Year

Now, that the calendar year is coming to close it is time for me to update the variety of year-by-year lists that I keep regarding various sporting moments and events. I have actually created a few new lists for 2025 and this is one of them. I, first of all, must preface this list by saying that by no means am I a lifelong, die hard wrestling fan. My childhood was instead defined by two distinct “wrestling phases” where I was absoutely obsessed with the sport. The first was during the “golden era” of the early 90’s and the second was during the “attitude era” of the late 90’s. I then gave up wrestling for much of the current century until my son got really interested in over the past few years. I have thus become reinvested in the sport and have decided to apply my analytical look at sports history to professional wrestling with the list below. For this analysis, I should clarify that by “greatest match” I am combing several factors most noably, the technical wrestling quality of a match, the crowd reaction/response to a match, and also the historical importance of each match. Please note that the bolded matches below are the greatest wrestling matches of each decade. Also, the statistics pertaining to each match’s location, type, venue and event is displayed below the year-by-year list at the bottom of this article.

YearMatchLocationComment
1985Hulk Hogan and Mr. T. defeat Paul Orndorff and Roddy Piper (Wrestlemania)Madison Square Garden (New York, NY)The only tag team match on the list introduced everything we have come to know and love about Wrestlemania main events: celebrity wrestlers (Mr. T in this case), celebrity referee (Muhammad Ali), and a whole lot of of pomp and circumstance.
1986Dusty Rhodes defeats Ric Flair (Great American Bash)- Steel Cage Match for NWA World Title MatchGreensboro Coliseum (Greensboro, NC)This is the only non-WWE match on the list, as Wrestlemania 2 was so bad that nothing on that card could be properly called a match of the year. Rhodes and Flairs were both legends who had a great rivalry in the 70s and 80s. This tussle in Greensboro was arguably their greatest battle.

The finishing sequence in this match was truly incredible as Cena hit an attitude adjustment off a ladder through two tables.
2007John Cena defeats Shawn Michaels (Wrestlemania 23)- WWE Title MatchFord Field (Detroit, MI)This was kind of a down year for wrestling as there were not too many all-time classics from 2007. Cena’ However, we have to choose one for this list and we’ll go with the battle between the world tag team champions at the time, Michaels and Cena. Cena’s entrance to the ring in his Ford Mustange was epic.
2008Shawn Michaels defeats Ric Flair (Wrestlemania XXIV)- Career Threatening MatchCamping World Stadium (Orlando, FL)We had to get the Nature Boy on this list more than once (see 1986 entry for his first match of the year) and while this wasn’t the best technical fight he ever fought (he was 59 years old at the time), it was his most emotional as Michaels fought through tears to end Flair’s career with a Sweet Chin Music.
