Week 5 Football Upsets to Watch Out For

These are in order from least shocking to most shocking according to the current lines at the Caesars Sportsbook.

Charlotte (+3.0) vs. UTEP- 6:00– As stated in my preseason preview guide, UTEP has never won a game in the eastern time zone in their 108 history of playing college football. The Miners may be the better team here, but I am going on the side of history and calling for the streak to continue.
Miami (+4.0) at Cincinnati- (Th) 8:15– The Bengals haven’t looked good all year, and the Dolphins are on fire right now.
Texas A & M (+4.0) at Miss. State- 4:00– The Aggies’ top 10 passing defense seems strong enough to slow down Leach’s Air Raid.
Troy (+5.0) at Western Kentucky– 7:00- I think the Trojans may be the better team here.
Kentucky (+7.0) at Ole Miss- 12:00– I was really surprised to see the line this high. Kentucky has proven it can win big games this year, while Ole Miss has not.
Wake Forest (+7.0) at Florida State- 3:30- The Deacons are the better team here, so as long as they avoid a hangover effort after their hearbreaking loss last week, they can win this game.
UL-Monroe (+7.0) at Arkansas State- 7:00– Monroe is playing well right now, and Arkansas State has yet to beat an FBS team this season.
Central Michigan (+7.0) at Toledo- 3:30– I think Toledo is the slightly better team here, but this seems like one of those wild MAC games that could go either way.
Georgia State (+7.5) at Army- 12:00– The Panthers are going to beat somebody soon. They are too good to stay winless for long.
Michigan State (+8.5) at Maryland- 3:30– Overall, the Spartans are significantly worse than they were last season, but they won last year’s matchup over Maryland by 19 points with a worse passing D than they have now.
UL-Lafayette (+9.0) vs. South Alabama- 5:00– This line would have certainly been flipped if it was based on preseason expectations. Instead, the Jaguars have looked really good while the Ragin’ Cajuns have floundered. Still, Louisiana has not lost a home game since October of 2020 so this won’t be a cakewalk for USA.
Akron (+9.5) vs. Bowling Green- 3:30– Two bad MAC teams. One must win. Why not pick the home team?
South Florida (+9.5) vs. East Carolina- 2:30– ECU had a heartbreaking home loss last week to Navy, and if they come in to this game dwelling about that one still, then the Bulls can beat them.
Purdue (+12.5) at Minnesota- 12:00– Despite the impressive run the Golden Gophers have had this season, I still think these teams are fairly even when it comes to talent on their roster.

Last week’s Upset Pick of the Week: UL-Monroe (+9.0) over UL-Lafayette (I correctly called this upset in the preseason!)
